Felipe Cohen na Millan, São Paulo

A Galeria Millan tem o prazer de apresentar, de 20 de março a 10 30 de abril de 2021, a exposição Felipe Cohen: Pálpebra, quarta individual do artista nascido em São Paulo, em 1976. Reunindo 10 obras — sendo 8 pinturas e 2 objetos — a mostra parte da ideia de desmaterialização do horizonte através da reflexão, fenômeno que tem sido objeto de estudo presente nas peças produzidas pelo artista na última década.

A partir dessa pesquisa, Cohen vem concebendo trabalhos que destacam a profundidade e o fenômeno da luz e seu efeito na ampliação da sensação espacial bem como suas afecções sobre a experiência temporal de uma imagem. Na exposição na Galeria Millan, a ocorrência da reflexão é articulada a partir da perspectiva da paisagem abrangendo questões do campo geométrico e simbólico.

Na série de pinturas, cujo título é emprestado à exposição, Cohen articulou formas circulares de mesmo tamanho com linhas horizontais, buscando situações de entrelaçamentos e sobreposições em que a unidade modular se diluísse no todo através da seleção das áreas que receberiam a tinta. “Como nas vitrines, nas quais foram inspiradas (série de objetos que venho fazendo desde 2013), há uma clara alusão a paisagens de poentes em horizontes líquidos, criando assim situações de reflexão e espelhamento”, explica o artista.

“Produzir paisagens, seja nas vitrines ou nas pinturas, sempre foi pra mim um pretexto para falar de articulações possíveis entre luz, tempo e espaço. O que me pareceu interessante desde o início do ato de articular essas formas foi a forma com que, com o mesmo módulo circular — símbolo do movimento cíclico —, era possível criar inúmeras situações de topografias e sugestões de profundidades”, conta. “As formas encontradas nessas pinturas me remeteram também a dois olhos, na maioria das vezes com uma pálpebra aberta e outra fechada, uma espécie de olhar da paisagem para o espectador. Me pareceu interessante esse segundo espelhamento, uma paisagem que olha de volta para o espectador”.

A exposição conta também com dois objetos feitos com copos de vidro e basalto que ocupam o espaço da vitrine da galeria. As pedras foram esculpidas a partir das formas dos copos criando uma relação de estranheza entre o conteúdo sólido, opaco e negro e a transparência dos vidros. Em um dos objetos a matéria pesada parece levitar dentro do conteúdo entre os copos. No segundo objeto acontece um movimento simétrico de expansão da matéria em direção às bocas dos copos, criando assim duas formas cônicas espelhadas pela sobreposição dos copos.

Galeria Millan is pleased to present, from March 20 through April 10 30, 2021, the exhibition Felipe Cohen: Pálpebra, the fourth solo exhibition by the artist who was born in São Paulo in 1976. Bringing together 10 works – 8 paintings and 2 objects – the exhibition stems from the idea of dematerializing the horizon through reflection, a phenomenon that has been the artist's object of study over the last decade.

From this research, Cohen has been conceiving works that highlight the depth and the phenomenon of light and its effect on the amplification of spatial sensations as well as its affections on the temporal experience of an image. In the exhibition at Galeria Millan, reflection is articulated from the perspective of the landscape, covering aspects of the geometric and symbolic fields.

In his series of paintings, the title of which is lent to the exhibition, Cohen juxtaposes circular shapes of the same size with horizontal lines, seeking an interlacing and overlap where the modular unit is completely reduced through the selection of areas that would be painted. “Similar to the display cases, in which they were inspired (a series of objects that I have been making since 2013), there is a clear allusion to landscapes of sunsets in liquid horizons, thus creating instances of reflection and mirroring,” explains the artist.

“Producing landscapes, whether in display cases or paintings, has always been a pretext for me to talk about possible articulations between light, time and space. What seemed interesting to me from the beginning of the act of articulating these shapes was the way in which, with the same circular form – a symbol for cyclic movement – it was possible to create countless topographical situations and suggestions of depth,” he says. “The shapes in these paintings also reminded me of two eyes – mostly with an eyelid open and the other closed – gazing from the landscape to the viewer. I found this second instance of mirroring quite interesting, a landscape that stares back at the viewer."

The exhibition also features two objects made with glass cups and basalt that occupy the gallery display case. The stones were sculpted in the shapes of the glasses, creating a strange relationship between the solid, opaque and black material and the transparency of the cups. In one of the objects, the heavy matter seems to levitate inside the content between the glasses. In the second object there is a symmetrical expansion of the matter towards the edge of the glasses, creating two conical shapes mirrored by the overlapping of the glasses.

Important announcement: due to the restrictions of the Purple Phase, from March 15 to 30, 2021, proposed by the Government of the State of São Paulo, the exhibition will be open to visitors from April 1, 2021.
