Alfredo Jaar na Luisa Strina, São Paulo
A Galeria Luisa Strina tem o prazer de apresentar Gold in the Morning, a primeira exposição individual do artista Alfredo Jaar na Galeria.

Alfredo Jaar é artista, arquiteto e documentarista, nasceu em 1956 no Chile, país onde se deu sua formação. Em 1982 mudou-se para Nova York, onde vive e trabalha atualmente.
Em 1985, Jaar viajou ao Brasil para documentar a mina de ouro de Serra Pelada, um ano antes de Sebastião Salgado começar a fotografar na região.
Jaar desenvolveu um grande grupo de trabalhos nos anos seguintes, em consequência dessa experiência. Ele primeiro lançou uma série dessas fotografias como parte da instalação Gold in the Morning, que foram exibidas em 1986, na Bienal de Veneza, onde o artista se tornou o primeiro artista latino-americano a participar da Bienal. Outro desdobramento desta série fotográfica foi a intervenção pública Rushes, realizada na estação de metrô Spring Street em Nova York, em que as imagens de Serra Pelada eram justapostas a cotações do valor do ouro ao redor do mundo.
A exposição será a primeira focada exclusivamente na série de Serra Pelada. Será composta por um vídeo e uma selação de fotografias tanto coloridas quanto branco e preto, incluindo suas imagens icônicas da paisagem e trabalhadores, como imagens até então inéditas da série.
A situação precária dos trabalhadores da mina de Serra Pelada registrada nessas fotografias, denuncia as relações perversas entre o crescimento econômico e condições de trabalho que muitas vezes são sacrificadas em prol do lucro.
Além da natureza documental, as imagens também atuam de forma metafórica como símbolos que articulam as contradições do mundo contemporâneo – pautado por relações de desigualdade social, domínio econômico e exploração da terra.
Dentre as diversas exposições coletivas do artista destacam-se: Bienal de Veneza (1986, 2007, 2009, 2013), Documenta de Kassel (1987, 2002) e Bienal de São Paulo (1987, 1989, 2010).
Alfredo Jaar realizou exposições individuais em instituições como New Museum of Contemporary Art, Nova York (1992); Whitechapel Gallery, Londres (1992); Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago (1992); Moderna Museet, Estocolmo (1994); Museum of Contemporary Art, Roma (2005); Berlinische Galerie, Alte Nationalgalerie e Neue Gesellschaft für Bildende Kunst, Berlin (2012); e no Museum of Contemporary Art Kiasma, Helsinque (2014).
O trabalho do artista pode ser encontrado em coleções ao redor do mundo, incluindo o Museum of Modern Art, Nova York: Tate, Londres; Guggenheim Museum, Nova York; LACMA, Los Angeles; MOCA, Los Angeles; Centro de Arte Reina Sofia, Madri; Centro Georges Pompidou, Paris; Moderna Museet, Estocolmo, e MASP, São Paulo.
Simultaneamente a abertura da exposição Gold in the Morning, a galeria organiza o lançamento do livro de artista Outros pensam / Otros piensan. A publicação é a versão em Português / Espanhol de Other People Think, projeto de Jaar em homenagem a John Cage, criado em seu centenário em 2012. O texto, que discorre sobre as relações entre a América do Norte e a América do Sul, foi escrito por Cage quando tinha 15 anos. Essa nova edição bilíngue é produziada e lançada no Brasil pela Ikrek Edições, com tradução Lucrecia Zappi.
Galeria Luisa Strina is pleased to present Gold in the Morning, Alfredo Jaar’s first solo exhibition to be held at the gallery.
Alfredo Jaar is an artist, architect and filmmaker. He was born in 1956 in Chile, where he was also educated. In 1982 he moved to New York, where he lives and works today.
In 1985 Jaar traveled to Brazil to document the Serra Pelada gold mine, a year before Sebastião Salgado began to photograph in the region.
Jaar developed a large body of work over the following years based on this experience. He first released a series of the photographs as part of his installation Gold in the Morning, exhibited in 1986 at the Venice Biennale where he became the first Latin American artist ever invited to participate in the Biennale. Another upshot of this photographic series was the public intervention Rushes, conceived that same year for the Spring Street subway station in New York, whereby images of Serra Pelada miners were juxtaposed against current gold prices around the world.
This exhibition will be the first ever to focus exclusively on the Serra Pelada series. It will consist of a video and a selection of both color and black and white photographs, including his iconic images of the landscape and workers as well as previously unreleased images from the series.
The precarious situation of the Serra Pelada miners registered in these images exposes the perverse relationships between economic growth and working conditions that are so often sacrificed for the sake of profit. Beyond their documental nature, these images also exercise a metaphorical function by symbolizing the contradictions of the contemporary world – based on relations of social inequality, economic dominance and exploitation of the earth.
The artist’s several collective exhibitions have included: Venice Biennale (1986, 2007, 2009, 2013), Documenta, Kassel (1987, 2002) and São Paulo Biennial (1987, 1989, 2010).
Alfredo Jaar has had solo exhibitions at institutions such as the New Museum of Contemporary Art, New York (1992); Whitechapel Gallery, London (1992); Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago (1992); Moderna Museet, Stockholm (1994); Museum of Contemporary Art, Rome (2005); Berlinische Galerie, Alte Nationalgalerie and Neue Gesellschaft für Bildende Kunst, Berlin (2012); and Museum of Contemporary Art Kiasma, Helsinki (2014).

Simultaneously with the opening of Gold in the Morning, the gallery will host a launch for the artist book Outros pensam / Otros piensan. The publication is the Portuguese / Spanish version of Other People Think, a project by Alfredo Jaar in homage to John Cage, created on the occasion of Cage´s Centennial in 2012. The text, which explores relationships between North and South America, was written by Cage when he was 15 years old. This new bilingual edition is produced and launched in Brazil by Ikrek Editions, translated by Lucrecia Zappi.
