A seleção da Fortes D’Aloia & Gabriel para Frieze New York 2020 aborda a complexidade da vida na cidade e tudo o que circula no ambiente urbano, acompanhando o fluxo de dinheiro, bens e informações através das obras de Agnieszka Kurant, Bárbara Wagner e Benjamin De Burca, Erika Verzutti, Gusmão e Paiva, Jac Leirner, Janaina Tschäpe, Leda Catunda, Luiz Zerbini, Marina Rheingantz, Rivane Neuenschwander, Rodrigo Cass, Sara Ramo, Tiago Carneiro da Cunha e Yuli Yamagata. Enquanto atravessamos o limiar de um admirável mundo novo, a arte continua sendo uma maneira de refletir a realidade e mostrar como o desejo pode ser ao mesmo tempo, perturbador e construtivo. Da eletricidade edificante da pintura de Verzutti em bronze, às expressivas paisagens litorâneas de Caneiro da Cunha, dos slams e ornamentos de MCs no filme-instalação de Wagner e de Burca, ao medo da violência física e psicológica na colcha de Neuenschwander, e nas pinturas de Tschape; essas obras perturbam o significado e ordem das imagens prontamente produzidas e consumidas por nossa sociedade. Seja em Detrito Origem, onde Ramo apresenta pedras falsas feitas de barro, terra, cimento incrustadas com notas reais de várias moedas, na pintura de padrões psicodélicos de Zerbini, na escultura e relevo têxtil de Yamagata ou na pintura suave de Catunda, ou ainda na pintura narrativa fragmentada de Rheingantz, somos convidados a ressignificar a destruição como um anúncio do que está por vir. Por fim, a imagem projetada pela escultura de bronze Pára-brisa em um dia nebuloso de Gusmão e Paiva é uma alegoria precisa do presente.
Our selection for Frieze embraces the complexity of city dwelling and everything that circulates in the urban environment, following the flux of money, goods and information, through the works of Tiago Carneiro da Cunha, Rodrigo Cass, Leda Catunda, Agnieszka Kurant, Jac Leirner, Gusmão e Paiva, Rivane Neuenschwander, Sara Ramo, Marina Rheingantz, Janaina Tschäpe, Erika Verzutti, Bárbara Wagner & Benjamin De Burca, Yuli Yamagata and Luiz Zerbini. As we walk through the threshold of an unfolding brave new world, art remains a way to reflect reality and how desire can be both disruptive and constructive. From the uplifting electricity of Verzutti’s painting on bronze, to Carneiro da Cunha’s expressionist coastal sceneries, to the spoken word slams and MCs’ ornaments in Wagner and de Burca’s film and installation, to the fear of violence both physical and pshycological in Neuenschwander’s quilt and Tschape’s paintings on paper, these works disrupt the meaning and order of images readily produced and consumed by our society. Ultimately, be it in Ramo’s “Detrito Origem”, which features fake stones made of clay, earth, cement and inlaid with real bills of various currencies, in a painting of psychedelic patterns by Zerbini, in Yamagata’s sculpture and textile relief or Catunda’s soft painting, or yet in Rheingantz’ fragmented narrative painting, one is invited to resignify destruction as an announcement of what is yet to come. Finally, the image projected by Gusmão and Paiva’s “Windshield on a Foggy Day” bronze sculpture, is an accurate allegory to the present.

A Fortes D’Aloia & Gabriel é referência no circuito mundial do vigor e da qualidade da arte contemporânea no Brasil. Representa 40 artistas – entre brasileiros e estrangeiros, jovens e consagrados – através de um programa dinâmico e plural. Promove 15 exposições por ano, em média, além de lançamentos de livros, oficinas para crianças, exibição de filmes e conversas com profissionais da área. Participa das mais importantes feiras de arte do mundo e apoia regularmente publicações e exposições institucionais. Fundada em 2001 por Márcia Fortes e Alessandra D’Aloia como Galeria Fortes Vilaça, mudou seu nome em 2016 quando Alexandre Gabriel, que até então ocupava a posição de diretor artístico, entrou para a sociedade. Possui atualmente três espaços expositivos, cada qual com sua própria identidade: a Galeria e o Galpão em São Paulo; e a Carpintaria no Rio de Janeiro. Mantém, ainda, um escritório em Lisboa com o intuito de gerenciar sua atuação internacional.
Fortes D’Aloia & Gabriel is a standard for the vigor and quality in Brazilian contemporary art within the international scene. It represents 40 artists – ranging from Brazilians to foreigners, from up-and-coming to the well established – through a dynamic and diversified program. It promotes an average of 15 exhibitions a year, as well as book launches, workshops for kids, screenings and talks with experts in the field. It takes part in the most important art fairs around the world and regularly supports institutional publications and exhibitions. Founded in 2001 by Márcia Fortes and Alessandra D’Aloia as Galeria Fortes Vilaça, it had its name changed in 2016 when Alexandre Gabriel, who had until then had served as Artistic Director, became partner. There are currently three exhibition venues, with distinct profiles: Galeria and Galpão, in São Paulo, and Carpintaria in Rio de Janeiro. There’s also an office in Lisbon to oversee its international operations. Fortes D’Aloia & Gabriel has participated in the Frieze Art Fair New York since its first edition.
